Glass asks for two things most owners do not buy. First, both faces. The underside of a canopy over a doorway collects everything that rises off that doorway, and rain never reaches it. Somebody is already up there with access set up; having them check the wall joint, the drainage, and the fittings while they are there costs almost nothing and is the difference between planned sealant work and an emergency call after water lands on a customer.
Fabric asks for regular washing on a schedule rather than when it looks bad. The reason is specific: mildew removal is easy while the growth is on the surface and impossible once it is in the coating. A fabric awning washed on a sensible interval keeps its colour for its full service life. One washed when someone finally complains has usually already lost it. Beyond that, fabric asks for stitching and hardware checks, and if it retracts, a person who is actually responsible for retracting it before a windstorm.
Both belong in a maintenance plan rather than in nobody's job description. Where glass has to be engineered and fabric does not
Overhead glazing is a safety element because it sits above people. None of that applies to fabric in the same way, which is part of why fabric is cheaper and quicker to install. It also means a fabric supplier can reasonably be a fabric supplier, while a glass canopy involves a structural decision and a wall connection that becomes part of your building envelope. If a glass canopy quote does not name a glass standard and does not describe how the unit connects to and seals against the wall, that is not a detail to sort out on site. It is the two things most likely to cost you later.
The cost conversation, without invented numbers
There is no honest single price for either, and anyone giving one over the phone has not looked at the wall. What can be said is which factors move the number.
