Slope-to-drain: the design promise every deck makes
Every balcony and exposed walkway is built on one quiet promise: the surface slopes, gently but continuously, toward an outlet. Rain lands, runs, and leaves within minutes. The waterproofing membrane underneath is designed around that promise. It is detailed to shed moving water, to stay dry between storms, and to spend most of its life without a pond sitting on it.
When the promise breaks, the membrane pays. Standing water works at every seam, termination, and upturn for days instead of minutes. It freezes in cold snaps and pries at whatever it froze inside. It grows algae and moss that hold moisture against the surface long after the sky clears. The parts of a deck drain, and where each one goes wrong
The grate or strainer
The small cover over the drain mouth that stops debris entering the pipe. On a balcony it competes with moss, planter soil, pigeon debris, and the fibres shed by door mats. A grate can disappear under a single pot moved during a patio rearrangement, and the drain behind it blocks in silence.
The drain body and membrane tie-in
The fitting set into the slab that the waterproofing membrane bonds or clamps into. This tie-in is the most sensitive detail on the deck: if the membrane connection fails, water follows the outside of the pipe into the structure, producing a leak that looks nothing like a drainage problem from below.
The tail pipe and leader

The sill of the balcony door, often sitting only a few centimetres above the deck surface. It is the spill point for the whole balcony: once ponded water climbs past the threshold, the leak arrives in the living room, on the finished floor, on the day of the storm. Decks with a single floor drain and no overflow have no cap at all, which makes the condition of that one small grate worth more attention than it ever receives. Renovations that add tile or paver build-ups over the original surface shrink the margin further, sometimes to almost nothing, without anyone doing the arithmetic.
Reading a deck in two minutes
After the next hard rain, look at four things. Where is the water sitting, over the drain or away from it? A pond over the drain means blockage; a pond that never reaches the drain means slope. Is there moss or dark staining in a ring? That is the footprint of a recurring pond, visible even in dry weather. Is the grate present, seated, and clear? And how close did the waterline get to the threshold? Silt lines and debris tide marks record the answer honestly.
